For too long, a wind farm debate bogged down in weird and unlikely claims has managed to leave the big issues that concern regional Australia largely untouched. That's why we were excited to read this editorial and article from Victoria's primary country newspaper, The Weekly Times.
The article outlines the almost $5 billion of investment waiting to happen in Victoria, which the Municipal Association of Victoria describes as "the single biggest investment in rural Victoria".
The editorial urges readers to move beyond "spurious health claims", acknowledges the economic bonanza that wind could deliver and identifies the real issues of how communities deal with living near technology that is "necessarily large and obvious" which will likely bring a "long-term change to our beloved landscape".
These issues are at the root of the challenges that wind energy faces as it becomes a larger part of rural Australia and we're pleased to see them finally get the focus they deserve.
